Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A), or more commonly referred to as BOTOX, has been synonymous with anti-wrinkle therapy. It is primarily used for the effacement of dynamic wrinkles such as those occurring on the forehead, around the eyes (crow’s feet), glabellar frown lines, and around the lips. However, not all are fully aware of its other wonderful applications for other conditions.
Square jaw lower face reshaping
Since its introduction in Asia in 2001, the method of using BoNT-A to reduce muscle bulk at the jaw line has become a sensational and revolutionary treatment. It is a relatively simple but effective procedure that can transform a square jaw into a slimmer V-shaped face so coveted by many Asian women. Onset of the effect is seen as soon as 2 weeks after the procedure and typically lasts for around 6 months .
BoNT-A works by inducing muscle relaxation and subsequently causes disuse atrophy (shrinking of muscle bulk due to weakened muscles). Hence it can be used for calf contouring for slender legs, shoulder contouring for longer neck and slimmer shoulder line and arm contouring to get rid of thick and stocky arm muscles. The effects of BoNT-A start to appear 2 weeks after the procedure and become prominent after 1 to 2 months. There may be a need for repeat injection and is dependent on the necessity of the patient.
Eyebrow shaping/ eyebrow lifting
The eyebrow shape and position can also be altered by doing a simple BoNT-A injection into specific target muscles.
Mouth corner elevation
Mouth corner depression can give off the impression of being sad. This can be remedied by doing a simple BoNT-A injection to produce a subtle upturn to give a smiling and pleasant appearance.
Cobblestone/ puckering chin
Hyperactive mentalis muscle which produces the cobblestone or puckering chin can exacerbate recession and shortening of the chin. BoNT-A injection into the chin muscles helps restores the smooth V line of the face.
Mesobotox/ dermotoxin / botox lift / Nefertiti Lift
Multiple intradermal delivery of BoNT-A produces a lifting effect, tightening of the skin and improvement of fine lines. In addition, it helps to reduce sebum (oil) production and pore size with repeated treatments. The Nefertiti lift is a procedure to create a sharp jawline, named after Nefertiti, the Egyptian queen famed for her perfect jawline.
Treatment of excessive sweating (Focal Hyperhidrosis)
Hyperhidrosis is a troublesome problem and can cause significant distress and social embarrassment. While there are effective topical antiperspirant available, the drawbacks are its short-lived effect requiring daily application, can be messy, and may produce itching and burning sensation. BoNT-A injection is a good treatment option for focal hyperhidrosis of the armpits, palms and soles. It works by temporarily blocking the signalling molecules of the sweat ducts. The procedure is short and simple with effects lasting as long as 6 months.
Disclaimer: Some of the above-mentioned procedures are considered off-label uses of Botox. To date, Botox is approved by the US FDA for the treatment of eye muscles disorders in 1989; inappropriate excessive muscle contractions including neck muscle spasm in 2000 and focal upper limb spasticity (2010); urinary bladder malfunction in 2011; excessive underarm sweating in 2004; and chronic migraine in 2010. The only cosmetic indication of Botox approved by the US FDA is eyebrow furrows. It is important that patients consult a qualified and experienced medical professional to achieve the best treatment outcome.
