HIV/AIDS is probably one of the most feared viral diseases in the world. In Malaysia, since it’s first case in 1986, there are now over 98,089 reported cases of HIV/AIDS with 18,827 cases of reported death. In 2016 only, there are over 3,397 newly reported cases of HIV infections.
If you are possibly being exposed to HIV recently, we would highly recommend you to take Post-Exposure Prophylaxis or PEP. It is an antiretroviral medicines (ART) to help preventing the virus from multiplying in your body. A constant use of PEP can help providing an extra layer of protection to shield yourself against the threat of HIV.
WHAT IS PEP?
Antiretroviral medicines or also known as ART are the medicines to prevent virus infections in our body. There are plenty of people infected with HIV are able to undergo normal daily routine while consuming this medicines. It is not necessarily a cure for HIV but it helps to keep HIV symptoms under control very effectively. By consuming ART, you lower the risks of being infected with HIV and adding a protection to your body in resisting the incurable disease.
PEP HIV is a conducive combination of TENVIR-EM tablets and Efavir tablets. Tenvir-EM contains Emtricitabine and Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (Tenofovir DF) which helps to increase immunity resistance against the virus. Whereas, Efavir contains Efavirenz to help keep the virus under control by preventing the virus from multiplying.
PEP is an effective treatment, but it is not 100% guaranteed. You are still recommended to take necessary precautions against the virus such as having safe sex by using condom, avoid sharing needles, having sex with multiple partners and any uncertain blood transfer from unauthorised parties. You may also use PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) if you are constantly exposed to HIV threats on daily basis.
