Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment For Knees

Hi everyone, I hope you are all enjoying a lovely and relaxing weekend with your friends and family. For today’s topic, I would like to talk about Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) for knees. While PRP has regularly been used to treat aesthetic problems such as acne, hair loss, pigmentation, pores and more, only in recent times has it been studied as a potential treatment option for problems such as osteoarthritis.

How It Works

Platelet Rich Plasma is a treatment method that helps to promote the process of cell regeneration, speeding up the body’s natural healing. When used on knees, it has the potential to alleviate pain as well as to improve the function of the knee. Initial studies conducted have indicated that the treatment is safe and effective, and can treat the early stages of osteoarthritis.

The platelets are full of growth factors which induce the healing process in the body. Although it does not change the natural process, it does help to speed up or intensify the body’s efforts by administering a larger concentration of platelets.

A blood sample will be drawn from your own body, similar to that of a blood test before being put into a special machine. The platelets are then separated from the other cells and serum by the machine, resulting in a concentrated solution of platelets. This is then injected into the injured knee which triggers the healing process. There is no need to worry about infections or other abnormal reactions because your own blood is used, meaning that your body does not identify the platelets as a foreign substance.

This non-surgical procedure is suitable for those who are afraid of surgery and would prefer a quick fix with very little downtime. In fact, many people are able to resume their daily activities and routines without much problem. However, do note that PRP treatment is not suitable for everyone and the initial consultation session with your doctor will determine if you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.

Results

Progress may be seen or felt within a few weeks of treatment, and can be long lasting due to the gradual healing that continues to occur. As mentioned previously, studies have shown that the treatment appears to be effective and helps patients return to normalcy.
